Single Origin Coffees

It seems to be feast or famine in our neverending search for excellent beans to offer our customers.  We are forever tasting and testing new opportunities, and we decline many many more than we choose to offer.  Rest assured, if a coffee makes it to this page it is a special coffee indeed.

As a good blend is a symphony on the palate, the ideal Single Origin is like a virtuoso soloist.  We choose beans that stand on their own yet offer a full coffee experience.  This type of single bean is rare since so many can excel for one reason or another but leave the experience flat in hindsight.  The telltale sign is when we think a cup is delicious on first try, but the next time we try the same bean and roast we find ourselves asking each other what was so special about it.

For these reasons the beans you will find here are of two general types - the old standbys like the Columbians and the Brazils, and the standouts from around the world that just blow us away.  All of the beans offered here will do fine as a drip or French press.  If they also do well as SO espresso, I will mention that in the description.

Buy More Save More!!!

The smartest way to buy coffee is always to buy fresh and to buy only what you will consume in a 2-3 week period.  This is what we encourage, but let's face it - if you can consume a pound within a week and a half then you have to take advantage of this great deal!  And remember, shipping becomes more reasonable at larger volumes.

To keep up with the quickly changing nature of the coffee supply this is a quick list of available coffees. What we are doing here is offering two options; a 2 pound package and a 3 pound package.

Columbia Supremo

This one is funny.  We really did not see ourselves as the "Columbia Supremo" type of supplier - call it snobbery or what you will.  Then we sampled this bean and realized (remembered) why Columbia is the grand-daddy of South American coffees. To say this coffee has a striking mouthfeel is an understatement - we honestly suspected someone had dropped a pat of butter in the cup.  This is a wonderfully balanced cup of coffee with some underlying sweetness - think brown sugar, some toasted nut, and that buttery mouthfeel.  Assuming this source maintains its quality, this will always be one of our standbys.

House Blends

Ethiopian - Harar

Rustic Fruited intensity. Mango, tamarind, berry brightness on the finish.  This is a classic example of this Dry processed classic varietal. The dry processing results in wild cup flavors, fruited, chocolate, spice, thick body. Good harars are some of the most special coffees in the world. This one is no exception.

 Ethiopian Sidamo "Koratie"

Amazing Dry-Processed East African coffee.  I hesitate to ever show ratings because what happens if it is not a plus "90" The fact is that I personally experience maybe one plus 90 rating per year. This is my first of the year. This is such an aromatic coffee! The fragrance from the dry grounds is heavenly; intense berry fruit (blueberry), with maple syrup sweetness. The wet aroma is of sweet blueberry-peach cobbler drenched in syrup. It's remarkable! While the cup is hot, the initial impression is of ripe, sweet pineapple. That peaches-in-syrup flavor is distinct too, and there is a bit of honeydew melon and cantaloupe in there too as the cup cools off.

Tanzania Blackburn Estate
The cup is bright and Kenya-like, but not as sour in acidity as most Kenyas. Cane sugar and brown sugar cakes sweetness. The body is sufficient, not super heavy or texturous. The cup is dominated by juicy berry fruit, and this undeniable sweetness, which lingers well into the aftertaste. The fruit has this very ripe, winey character.  Sweetness, fruit and winey flavors come to the foreground as the cup cools, along with that slight East African wild note, a bit dusty and hidey. .

 Mexico - Turquesa

Remember those oh-so-rare occasions when you take a sip from a cup of coffee and think to yourself, "This is what coffee is supposed to taste like"?   This was our first thought when we tried this delicate Mexican coffee.  Sharing characteristics of a fine Yirgacheffe and a nicely balanced Panama, this coffee is a great all-occasion coffee.

We roast this to a full city (medium)roast, light enough to preserve the wonderful origin flavors that fill this cup, but dark enough to add some roast flavor and balance.

Wonderful from a vac pot.  Also great for drip and very good as an SO espresso.

Sumatra - Mandheling

This is our latest crop of an old standby.

Roasted to Full City Plus (Medium Dark) to take full advantage of the deep character and natural sweetness inherent to the Sumatras.

Excels as an SO espresso: thick, dark crema with a wonderful lingering sweetness on the palate. Also works well in milk drinks like lattes.

JUST A COUPLE POUNDS LEFT!
Yemen - Mocha Sana'ani

This is yet another GREAT East African coffee.  As per usual, expect lots of fruit and spice in this dry processed coffee. But this one is really special. Hints of dried blueberry mingle with spicy cinnamon and milk chocolate to create a wonderful balance.  This is a must try! Oh yeah, we only bought a micro batch of this so it will go fast.

Ethiopia - Sidamo

This is a treat. Lovely milk chocolate, fruit overtones, clean finish. These features add up to a well-balanced cup with delicate flavor yet still full body.  We do this one light.  The melange roast might throw some of you but wait until you taste it before judging.
